Understanding the Kiruna climate

🌲 Subarctic inland (Kiruna, Gällivare, Jokkmokk)

Swedish Lapland has a marked inland climate: cold, dry, snow-sure winters and short, mild summers. The mercury can dip below −30°C in cold spells — and top +25°C on fine summer days.

🏔️ The Abisko rain shadow

The mountains toward Norway catch the precipitation, so the Abisko area on Lake Torneträsk is among Scandinavia’s driest and clearest. The famous “blue hole” — a patch of often cloud-free sky — makes Abisko one of the world’s best-known aurora spots.

☀️ Arctic light

Midnight sun in Kiruna from about late May to mid-July, and a few weeks of polar night around New Year. The aurora season runs from September to late March — the Aurora Sky Station in Abisko ranks among the world’s best places to see it.
